If you came across thousands of sweaty people covered in glow sticks you'd be forgiven for thinking you'd stumbled across a hipster rave. But this isn't your average up all-nighter. A unique sporting event unlike any other, Kuala Lumpur's annual 5km Electric Run sees joggers line the streets in bright neon clothes as they grab their glowsticks and run through the city to the sound of booming music, cheers and jubilant bystanders.
According to the official website, Electric Run promises to 'transport the mind, body and soul to a new world in a healthy and drug-free way'. The event kicks off at Selangor Turf Club, which is right behind the award-winning luxury hotel, the Palace of Golden Horses.
Runners will be jogging through a number of impressive themed areas along the way, with this year's 'worlds' including Electro Rainforest, Neffmau5 Land, Under The Sea, Candy Lane and Rainbow Road. The event's organisers describe the course as a chance to 'experience diverse wonderlands filled with beaming lights and electrifying music in between lands.' Not your average jog on the treadmill then.
Whilst some sections of the course are dedicated to creating a party atmosphere, other areas will be beautifully ethereal. The event begins at 8.30pm and is described as an 'experience' rather than a race. Bring your A-game (but you can leave the neon leotards and body paints behind).
- Get there: The Selangor Turf Club is located south of the city centre, so take the train or get a taxi there.
- Stay: Find accommodation in Kuala Lumpur - stay south of the centre to be nearer to the starting point.
