When you think of a festival you might imagine a weekend spent in a field with tents, some music stages and a few fancy-dress wearers for good measure. Not so at Kuala Lumpur's Urbanscapes Festival. This epic two week event is huge - both in the diversity of performers and also its citywide location. If Malaysia did Glasto...

Dubbed Malaysia's premier creative arts festival, it's the country's longest running of its kind. Bringing together creative communities from across the city and beyond, the festival welcomes a wealth of artists, designers, filmmakers and musicians.

Previous years have seen performances from big name acts, including the likes of Rudimental and M83, while smaller stages and venues welcome local, up-and-coming bands. There are also craft markets (led by award-winning designers), hotel takeovers (with pool-parties and exclusive DJ sets) plus a range of 'feasts' which see culinary greats serve up delicious local fare.

For the 2016 event, organisers created a 'Golden Ticket' treasure hunt which saw locals scramble around the city to find tickets after reading tip-offs on the Urbanscapes social media sites. The lucky winners were able to score a pair of tickets to the live shows to see the likes of Tama Impala. Let's hope your investigating skills are up to scratch for next year.

#travioortip: keep an eye on the Urbanscapes social media sites to see if they do another 'Golden Ticket' hunt like last year.

As expected, tickets are hotter than the Malaysian sun at high noon, so booking (well) in advance is essential. Loud, arty and seriously huge, Urbanscapes isn't your average muddy weekender, so keep an eye out for line-up news as next year is sure to be bigger than ever.

  • Get there: Fly into Kuala Lumpur then use the monorail and buses to get around the city.
  • Stay: With venues all over the city, your best bet is to stay central so you'll be able to access them all with ease.
