To us, an Ironman race sounds like a gruelling challenge where you have no time to stop for a breath, let alone to take in the views. But if anything was to get us dusting off our trainers it would be the chance to compete in a race held on a tropical island paradise. And nowhere's more idyllic than Malaysia's Langkawi, which is hosting the Ironman Challenge in 2016, complete with a spectacular route that passes by lush scenery and panoramas of the Andaman Sea.
The route starts with an ocean swim along Pantai Kok, fringed with a white-sand beach and swaying coconut palms. Competitors will complete a two-loop triangle out and back course before hopping on a bike to cycle to Pentai Kok. Passing by the verdant hills of Datai and the edge of Kuah town, the athletes then drop off their bikes and begin the final run, which finishes at beautiful Cenang beach. While we admit, this doesn't sound particularly easy - especially when you factor in the blistering Malaysian heat - we bet those competing are quite glad for such awe-inspiring views. After all, athletes who finish in the top 40 qualify for 2017's challenge which is in... Hawaii. Sounds awful.
If you don't fancy competing feel free to join the crowds; the atmosphere's electric and there are plenty of beautiful spots to cheer the athletes on. If you're planning on being in Langkawi during the race then make sure you book accommodation well in advance as many supporters, competitors and trainers descend on the island for the weekend. And we can see why; after you've watched the race head for a swim on one of the pristine, desert-island like beaches, stop off at the night market for some street food or sip a cocktail at a sunset bar. If the thought of that doesn't help you up your game, then, quite frankly, nothing will.
- Get there: Fly into Langkawi and use taxis to get around.
- Stay: Stay close to the beach so you can sunbathe and relax afterwards.
