- Where: Telaga Harbour Park and Pentai Cenang, Langkawi
- Price: Free
If the 100 metre sprint at the Olympics sounds a bit too much like hard work then how about about a challenge that's a little more relaxed - welcome to Langkawi's Water Festival. Featuring a sand-castle making competition, a fishing 'race' and an underwater treasure hunt, this is exactly the kind of relaxed sporting festival we'd expect on laid-back Langkawi.
Occurring in April each year, the competition - in partnership with the tourism board - is held around Telaga Harbour Park and Pentai Cenang. Attracting a wealth of competitors and spectators alike, the event hosts an island-to-island kayak race, an underwater treasure hunt, beach netball and (our favourite) a sand-castle competition. Alongside these activities are fishing events, live music and enough street food stalls to keep you full for hours.
The festival is held in conjunction with Malaysia's national event of the same name - Langkawi's selling point is its idyllic tropical beach location. If you're planning on going, make sure you book accommodation early as many places often sell out fast. But that's the only thing that needs speed at this fest; the rest sounds pretty chilled to us.
- Get there: Fly into Langkawi International Airport (LGK) - it's in between the Harbour Park and Pantai Cenang.
- Stay: Base yourself in either Harbour Park or Pantai Cenang, the two are 20 minutes apart.
