Run, cheer or simply soak up the atmosphere at Malé's annual Dhiraagu Maldives Road Race that takes place every August.
- When? 11th August 2017
- Where? Malé
- Price: TBC
What do you associate with the Maldives? Glorious white sand beaches? Sipping a cocktail from a coconut as the sun sets? How about a gruelling road running race? Perhaps not, but that's what you'll get if you head to the capital in August as the Dhiraagu Maldives Road Race once again returns to the city's streets.
The largest race in the country, this annual event sees professionals and amateurs compete as they follow a route that circumnavigates Malé - spectators and participants alike are treated to race-side views of the turquoise palm-fringed waters that surround the city. Though the blistering heat and tropical temperatures may put some people off, the fact that it's all for charitable causes makes the challenge a bit more palatable. Drawing in Maldivian athletes as well as runners from around the world, this event attracts thousands of supporters who line the streets to cheer the runners on (great if you don't fancy the actual race itself).
If you're in Malé on race day then get yourself down to the seafront (either as a spectator or an athlete, we'll leave you to decide...). After all, the poolside cocktail can wait - this is far more worthy than topping up your tan.
- Get there: Use locals buses or taxis to get around Malé; the island can be reached by ferry.
- Stay: Book accommodation anywhere on the island - it is small enough to navigate quickly.
