Get ready for a huge party at the annual Ananda Temple Festival, held in Bagan's most famous religious building.
We don't like doing things by halves (after all, nobody wants to be that person who leaves the club at 10pm) so if you're planning on attending one of Myanmar's hundreds of pagoda festivals, you should make it one of the largest: welcome to Ananda Temple Festival.
Considered by many to be the biggest and best festival of its kind in Bagan, this event sees the city's most famous temple come alive with its annual celebration. Attracting thousands of visitors each year, it's part religious ceremony, part thriving market. Bazaar-style stalls pop up, selling local trinkets and wares while shouting street food salesman entice you with rich, spicy smells. Alms bowls are filled with everything from crops to money and offered to the Pagoda's resident monks, the trademark of any Buddhist festival. Outside, a fairground area creates a carnival atmosphere and many restaurants offer deals or special menus.
The festival is in honour of the limitless wisdom of Buddha and as such, sees visitors arrive from far and wide to pay their respects and religious devotion. This is one of the biggest events of its kind in the region so we reckon you should go the whole hog and make time to attend. After all, we're a huge fan of the go hard or go home mantra. You might as well celebrate at the best right?
