Who says winters have to be dark and gloomy? The Amsterdam Lights Festival certainly proves otherwise...
- When? 30 Nov 2017 - 21 Jan 2018
- Where? Various locations around Amsterdam, Netherlands.
- Price: The walking route is free, prices for the boat route vary.
It turns out that it's not just people lighting up in Amsterdam; this winter the city's streets light up too. Thanks to the spectacular Amsterdam Lights Festival, the Dutch capital comes alive with an incredible open-air exhibition across more than 50 days.
Winter is a fantastic time to visit the Netherland's most popular city because of the top light artists who come to display their works and creations. Although Amsterdam is well known for its naughty side, this festival ignites a romantic atmosphere and reminds you just how beautiful the city can be.
The two main routes to explore are 'the boat route' (Water Colors) and 'the walking route' (Illuminade) which winds through the neighbourhoods of Weesper and Plantage. Float along the canal as the colourful lights glisten across the water's surface or enjoy the sculptures and art installations in the city centre. Whether you see this light spectacle on foot or by boat, both routes are equally magical.
There's plenty more colours than the reds of the Red Light District and the green in the coffee shops... #justsaying.
- Get there: Fly to Amsterdam then take a taxi or a train to the city centre.
- Stay: Book accommodation by the Singel Canal to be well-located for the boat route.
