If you're looking for something more flowery than Austin Powers' trousers, then Keukenhof Gardens - with its seven million flowering bulbs - should fit the bill.
Just a 45-minute drive from the centre of Amsterdam, these gardens (open for eight weeks per year) are the perfect place to put a spring in your step. Home to hundreds of lovingly tended flower beds, Keukenhof is the work of 500 dedicated gardeners. 'The Golden Age' was 2016's theme which celebrated Holland's history of global trade. Next to the Oranje Nassau Pavilion, artfully placed blooms create a flower mosaic which depicts sea trade and Amsterdam's canal-side houses.
Tulips (often known as Holland's national flower) are the stars of the show, with over 800 different varieties. There are also several themed gardens across the grounds, including the Delfts Blauw Garden, the Vegetable Garden, the Romantic Garden and the Vintage Garden. For those already dreaming of summer, there's also a Beach Garden, complete with sand reed grass and plenty of tropically coloured flowers.
Keukenhof Gardens also hosts a sculpture exhibition which features pieces from local and international artists. If you don't feel like walking around the 32 hectare site then one of the best ways to explore the grounds is on a 'whisper' boat. These boats, which silently glide through the gardens along the winding streams, are an incredibly peaceful - they're also a great way to take some wow-factor pictures. For green-fingered types a free, guided walking tour happens daily at 2pm (beginning at the Juliana Pavilion).
Several restaurants and food stalls dot the gardens - try the Wilhelmina Pavilion for traditional Dutch plates or the Tea Pavilion for coffee and cake. There are also flower shows which showcase different species of bloom - these change daily so check your specific dates to find out more.
If you buy tulip bulbs to plant at home then the knowledgeable shop staff can give you advice and tips; they'll also post them to you in the autumn, the optimum time to sow. Gives a whole new meaning to 'flower power'.
