Batman and Robin? Meh. A far better combination is the timeless duo of food and music, possibly two of our favourite things. Add beer and friends and you've got the perfect weekend: Welcome to Piccalilli Food Camp.
Returning to Rotterdam for a second year, Piccalilli Food Camp is designed with food lovers in mind. The three-day event brings together 30 trucks and stalls from across the Netherlands, many of which are headed by well-known street food specialists and chefs. Celebrating all things food-related, Piccalilli is as much about the experience as the eating - go hungry, there's so much to taste and try.
You'll also get a chance to see how dishes are prepared and cooked and there are demonstrations throughout the weekend. Knowledgeable chefs and caterers are on hand to take you through the cookery process and provide tips and tricks you can try at home. If you want to eat like the locals, there's a mouth-watering array of Dutch dishes; expect bratwurst, locally produced cheeses (including Gouda and Edam), traditional savoury pancakes and bakery tables serving rye and pumpernickel breads. For sweet treats, it doesn't get much better than the crispy waffles served with melted chocolate and coffee (check out the trendy latte art). Bitters, beers and cocktails are available in the drinks tents, perfect for an early evening tipple.
Piccalilli Food Camp also has a buzzy festival feel with several stages dotted around the long trestle dining tables, with an eclectic lineup of singer-songwriters, live bands and DJs. If the weather's nice, pack a blanket and chill out on the grass for the day, Kralingse Bos is renowned for its ample green space and picturesque lake. Even better - grab your favourite sidekick and make weekend of it, the festival is a perfect match made in food and music heaven.
