Although traditional western Christmas celebrations involve the likes of snow, reindeer, brussel sprouts and a fat man in a red suit that doesn't mean that's the only kind of seasonal jollity out there. Head to Cebu City in the Philippines and you'll encounter a very different kind of festive fun and if the tropical heat has left you feeling a bit like Scrooge, then the Paskuhan Festival is the perfect solution.
One of the most popular activities that takes place during the month long event is colourful lantern making - these are then displayed on the streets and in people's homes. Part of the city is devoted to a sparkling 120 foot Christmas tree which is surrounded by street food and handicraft stalls. The market vibe and locals who arrive to visit from nearby villages give the event a fun, bazaar-like feel. There's also a nightly cultural show with song, dance and music.
While you might be hard pushed to find snow, Paskuhan Festival is a wonderful Christmasy celebration with all the trimmings (albeit with a tropical tone). And let's face it - no one really likes sprouts anyway.
