Fat Thursday is a day of gluttony celebrated not just in Warsaw but the whole of Poland. It’s one final chance for people to indulge in sweets and pastries before they’re made to undergo fasting for Lent.
Bakeries are the busiest places in Warsaw at this time of year, with people will form long queues outside bakeries to buy pączki. These are large, jam-filled, deep-fried doughnuts that are glazed with sugar, and sometimes topped with candied orange peel. There are even pączki eating contests if you can handle stuffing that many down your throat. Another Fat Thursday favourite are faworki - thin dough ribbons, fried until crispy and sprinkled with powdered sugar.
