Welcome to the summer season; Festas de Lisboa (Lisbon Festival) arrives in the Portuguese capital in June for a month of entertainment, art, music and parties. Hand drawn sardine art (we'll explain later) dot the city's streets, while Saint Anthony (Lisbon's patron saint) is celebrated with a huge procession and party. Fish, frolics and festivities - not your usual combination but awesome nonetheless.
Featuring everything from street performances and parades to folk acts and pop up cinema, the event is spread across the capital; many of the old quarters (including Barrio Alto and Castelo) put on distinctive local shows. As well as brightly coloured street garlands, one of the main symbols of the festival - the sardine - is everywhere. Something of an icon, artists design creative pieces that sit inside cut-outs of the fish and there's an annual competition to choose the best (you'll also see grilled sardines on menus too).
The highlight of Festas de Lisboa happens midway through the month, when locals and visitors alike take to the streets around Avenida da Liberdade for parades and festivities. The following day the whole city turns out for a procession to celebrate Saint Anthony which culminates in front of the beautiful Sé Cathedral. If you're still looking to party there's still plenty going on after this two day extravaganza too (look out for fado folk dances on the trams). Looks like the fish are here to stay - we hope you like sardines!
