Here you'll see fantasy film buffs get even more excited than when they saw Harry Potter defeat Voldemort on the big screen. Fantasporto is Porto's very own international fantasy film festival showing a number of blockbuster and art movies.
Dating back to 1981, Fantasporto has been running for over 30 years and today it is hosted at the Rivoli Theatre. Expect to find a variety of films suited to a range of audiences, which all include an element of fantasy. It mixes the arts and sciences with film and has welcomed concerts, workshops, street performances and more over the years. However, its essential aim is to act as a platform for high quality independent cinema and up-and-coming film makers.
A total of 10 sections make up the event, with four competitive categories for attendees to enter. Around 50 countries are represented each year in some 250 films that are submitted. Conferences, debates and Q&A sessions make up the rest of the festival, with plenty of presentations taking place too.
You'll need to purchase a pass in advance which costs around 100 euros, or buy individual tickets which start at around five euros per film. All the films shown in the great auditorium are spoken in English or have English subtitles so you won't need to perfect your Portuguese or invent your own dialogue. Plus there's the Vampires' Ball at the end of the festival to enjoy just in case you haven't had enough of a fantasy fix.
- Get there: Fly to Porto and then take a train into the city centre. The Teatro Municipal Rivoli is closest to the Aliados Subway Station.
- Stay: Book accommodation north of the river for an easier trip.
