One of Portugal's biggest sporting events, the Porto Marathon, returns to the city in November. Visitors and runners are treated to a spectacular route and festival feel as historic Porto buzzes with energy.
Whether you're an aspiring Usain Bolt or a comfy couch potato, the Porto Marathon is a great place to participate or celebrate. Passing historic sights and waterside panoramas along the way, this 26 mile route attracts athletes from around Europe and beyond. We'll see you at the finish line.
Now running for over 12 years, the Porto Marathon is a hotspot on the city's sporting calendar with thousands of spectators and participants taking to the streets each year. The race begins and finishes at Parque da Cidade do Portov (the main city park) and passes past some of Porto's most spectacular sights. The relatively flat route leads runners through the historic centre, along the seafront and riverside before crossing Porto's historic Eiffel bridge. Now the biggest marathon in Portugal, this annual event also incorporates smaller fun and family runs, encouraging plenty of people to take part.
Whether you're participating (runners can register - for a fee - until October 31st), supporting participants or just there to soak up the energetic atmosphere, the route is lined with beautiful buildings and a lively crowd who cheer the joggers on. Our favourite spot is the section along the gorgeous Douro River and the Atlantic Ocean - you may even see some sunshine at this time of year. Given the popularity of the event, it's a race to find accommodation over marathon weekend, so you better get a move on if you're planning to visit.
*We do our very best to verify the dates of our events but please check with the official event provider before booking your flights. We would hate for you to be disappointed!
