It might sound a bit Willy Wonka, but vinho verde (green wine) is a big deal in Portugal. And nowhere more so than the northern city of Porto which dedicates an entire festival weekend to the popular drink. Cheers!
The event, which has been growing in popularity in recent years, attracts a variety of visitors - from wine makers and drinkers to restaurateurs and bartenders. As you can imagine, everyone's eager to sample this famous Portuguese tipple. The festival showcases over 150 types of wine and features several tasting stations and a cocktail bar. There are also masterclasses and chef demos that show attendees how to cook with the various beverages.
Held over several days in July, Vinho Verde fest is the perfect way to round off your Porto city break. And if things are looking a bit Willy Wonka by the end of your visit then we think it's more likely to be the booze...pints of water at the ready.
- Get there: Aeroporto Francisco Sá Carneiro (OPO) is the closest to the city. Get around using the metro.
- Stay: Book accommodation north of the river to be nearby the city's other attractions.
