This Arts festival of theatre, music, film and dance was reopened by theatrical Director Ong Keng Sen in 2014 after a two year hiatus.
Lights, camera, action. It's curtains up for the Singapore International Festival of Arts.
Artistic director Ong Keng Sen's vision is to provoke change in a Singaporean society that he deems too insular for its own good.
The annually updated theme lends direction and purpose to the performances. Previous themes include, 'Potentialities', 'POST-Empires' and ''Legacy and the Expanded Classic', contemplating thoughts of future change, globalisation and the lasting societal impressions of the 20th century respectively. Festival director Ong Keng Sen's tact for instilling international appeal into his projects attracts first-timers as well as the wider art community.
SIFA is preceded by its pre-festival, O.P.E.N. (Open, Participate, Enrich, Negotiate), which runs during June and July and provides an opportunity to learn about the annual theme. 2016's pre-festival and main event saw record numbers of visitors, with 155,000 people doubling the attendance of 2015's festival. With over 75 percent of shows seeing a full-house, Ong Keng Sen's vision seems to be becoming a reality.
The mammoth five weekends of performances are located all over the city in buildings of national importance, like the Gardens by the Bay, Malay Heritage Centre and the Victoria Theatre. Prepare to be socially engaged, emotionally moved and utterly perplexed by this progressive adventure.
It's time for the curtain call as SIFA enters the limelight this summer.
