Bratislava's Christmas Market or Vianočné trhy Bratislava as it's known to the locals (trying saying that with a mouthful of mulled glögg), arrives in the Slovakian capital every winter with enough festive cheer to melt even the scroogiest of miser's hearts.
Located in the historic old town around Marktplatz, Bratislava Christmas Market is loved by tourists and locals alike, who descend on the event to sip mulled booze, nibble at iced gingerbread cookies and generally get into the spirit of the season. If you've left gift shopping until the last minute you can also pick up some suitably Christmas-y gifts, as well as hand-made goodies like pottery, soap and jewellery from one of the hundreds of stalls.
After perusing local goodies, stop for some hearty Slovakian fare; local staples include roasted meats, savoury cheese pancakes and sugar dusted pastries. Wash it down with a pint of Saris or a mug of spiced apple cider. After, listen to the folk musicians and singers who perform in Slovakian at the market each evening. You'll be as merry as a Christmas elf in no time (the festive grog may help).
- Get there: To reach Bratislava, fly into Bratislava airport or take the train to the main station or Petrzalka station.
- Stay: Check out accommodation in the Old Town so you can walk to the markets and be close to other tourist hot-spots.
