- Where? Bratislava
- Price: free
Most people would jump at the chance to be king or queen for a day. The only problem is, you won't be the only one at Bratislava's Coronation Celebration Festival. The largest cultural celebration in Slovakia, this event sees a mass of revellers dressed in period costumes, all celebrating the history of the country's monarchy.
This huge re-enactment of the coronations - which have taken place in the city since 1563 - is a major event in the city's annual calendar. Bratislava has hosted a ceremony for eleven Hungarian kings and eight queens, and every year people gather in their thousands to enjoy traditional spectacles that were once associated with these occasions. Many come dressed in period costumes including the 200 actors and more than 150 artistes who entertain the crowd in the Old Town.
Other festivities include a coronation parade and ceremony which, every year, sees a prince crowned. Dancing, arts and crafts, delicious food and a buzzing atmosphere can also be expected, alongside typically Medieval games and activities including jousting and stilt walking.
You might not be the only king or queen in town but with all the entertainment here, at least you'll be spoiled like one.
- Get there: To reach Bratislava, fly into Bratislava airport or take the train to the main station or Petrzalka station.
- Stay: Check out accommodation in the Old Town to be in the middle of the action.
