Hailed the biggest picnic in town, the Slovak Food Festival offers a taste of quintessential Slovakia in the capital of Bratislava.
Usually a picnic is assumed to be a rather small and intimate affair. Yet the Slovaks go above and beyond for their annual Slovak Food Festival which is referred to as the biggest picnic in town. Bring an appetite - you can expect Slovakian, Hungarian, Austrian and Czech cuisine.
Held in the grounds of Bratislava Castle, this hearty food festival has been running for several years and attracts a crowd of locals and visiting tourists from across the city. Entry is free so you can just go to soak up the atmosphere if you wish, although you'll do well not to purchase some of the delicious cuisine on show.
Caterers and restaurateurs come from across Slovakia and neighbouring countries to showcase their culinary delights preparing food in front of your eyes. Choose from various kinds of meats, cheeses, home-baked breads, cakes, pies and more. Plus there'll be a wide selection of beer, wine and traditional spirits to wash it all down with.
The festival is set among beautifully kept grounds and the thousands of visitors can all tuck into their food while enjoying the stunning views across the city. Again, as is normally the case, there's also sure to be a program of events and entertainment including musicians and a cooking school.
Our advice: Put that diet on hold.
