Els Enfarinats Alicante

A festival making use of flour and eggs sounds like it might have something to do with cake. However, the citizens of Ibi know otherwise, and their Els Enfarinats festival is one huge party.

If you're looking for a one-day festival which is just the right amount of carnival vibe mixed with anarchy, we've got just the thing for you. You might want to watch this one from the sidelines though; it's going to get messy.

This 200-year-old tradition takes place in Ibi, a town 30 minutes outside of Alicante. As a part of the Day of the Innocents celebrations, Els Enfarinats sees a group of men dressed in mock military uniforms take control of the town. Don't worry, it's only for show, but the day is certainly an all out party with eggs, flour and firecrackers flying in every direction. The men make satirical speeches and impose fake laws for the day, fining anyone who dares break them. They often enter shops and banks to impose their completely ridiculous laws, but the fines are donated to charity, so there is a method to the good-natured madness.

All this drama doesn't go unnoticed, and it is the job of 'La Oposicio' (the opposition) to try and restore order making for one big fight. It is said that over 1500 eggs and hundreds of kilograms of flour are thrown in the annual battle, and we can certainly say we wouldn't like to be on the receiving end.

The exact origins of Els Enfarinats are unknown, but it is believed to have stemmed from the Feast of Fools, an event which was part of the Roman festival of Saturnalia.

Who knew flour and eggs could be so entertaining - watch out Great British Bake Off, you've got competition.
