The festival of Virgen del Carmen (The Blessed Virgin Mary of Mount Carmel) falls in the middle of July and sees a large effigy of the iconic religious figure paraded through towns up and down the coast of Alicante.
Once known as 'Queen of the Seas', The Virgen del Carmen has been adopted by mariners as a patron, meaning that this summer event is particularly popular in the city's fishing towns.
On the evening of July 16th, Alicante celebrates with fireworks, street parties, parades and musical performances. Whilst specific celebrations vary depending on the location, all the events carry on until late into the night, and big crowds are guaranteed to keep the atmosphere electric.
The sea theme of the event also means that Alicante's ports are decorated accordingly, and there are also parties over on the nearby island of Tabarca, which lies 11 nautical miles offshore.
- Get there: Fly into Alicante Airport (ALC) and then drive or take a taxi to the city.
- Stay: Book accommodation near the ports to see all the decorations.
