Once an independent town itself, the area of Gràcia is now home to one of the Spain's biggest fiestas, the Festa Major de Gràcia. It's no secret the Spanish enjoy a good fiesta and Festa Major de Gràcia is the most popular of the street festivals in Barcelona.
The festival is such a big deal it takes months of advanced planning to pull it off. Each of the 25 street associations in the area competes with each other to see who can throw the most grandiose of parties. The competition level is high, which is great for visitors.
Each year has a different theme and prizes are awarded for the streets with the best creativity, tastiest food and strongest (or should that be strangest) selection of drinks.
Possibly the most spectacular elements are the street decorations and illuminations - most of which are impossibly intricate yet handmade. It truly has to be seen to be believed.
