If you're a keen runner and looking for something a little different, why not head to Spain for the Bilbao Night Marathon. A great city with three races of varying lengths - can you handle the 42k?
- When? 21 October 2017
- Where? Bilbao
- Price: Tickets for 2017 are yet to be released.
If you're running the Bilbao Night Marathon this October, prepare by eating healthy meals with a side of carrots so you can see better in the dark (at least that's what mum used to tell us). With three different distances - 10k, 21k and 42k - to choose from, runners of all abilities have the option to enter.
Since 2008, this marathon has been firmly on Bilbao's sporting annual events calendar. A total of 12,000 runners come from across the nation and nearby countries to run the city's attractive circuit. The night time ambiance provides a completely different energy to a typical city marathon; for a start, participants avoid a battle with the unforgiving Spanish sun. Whether you choose to run 10km, 21km or go the whole 42km, every race will begin at 8:30pm, although you'll need to register well in advance to take part.
A great atmosphere can be found around the circuit which passes by some of the city's top landmarks and attractions. Music and small events are usually put on nearby the track to help create an encouraging and vibrant atmosphere for spectators and runners alike.
It's also worth noting that if you're heading to Bilbao just to watch, accommodation gets snapped up months in advance so try and book early. No vegetables and healthy meals needed for the non-runners though, just maybe a few carrots for a better view.
- Get there: Fly to Bilbao, you can be in the city centre in under 20 minutes.
- Stay: The race starts and finishes at the Guggenheim Museum, so stay nearby to secure your starting spot.
