When the start of summer comes around, we can undertsand that some feel the need to celebrate. And in Bilbao, that means it's time for Bilboko Kalealdia.
- When? 26 June - 1 July 2017
- Where? Various venues, Bilbao
- Price: Free
In the UK we tend to signal the start of summer with a glass of Pimms in a beer garden or by bringing the shades out when driving the car. In Bilbao it's certainly a bigger deal, with the Bilboko Kalealdia (a street theatre and performing arts festival) creating a buzzing atmosphere in the city.
Every year, Bilbao's main Gran Via and the city's Old Quarter host the events associated with this performance inspired extravaganza. Throughout the week, locals and visiting tourists will be treated to a variety of entertainment including anything from circus acts and death defying acrobats to puppet shows and contemporary dance. Events and performances run well into the evening as crowds of people come to enjoy the vibrant ambience as cafes and restaurants spill out onto the city streets.
The best thing about it all? It's free. Plus (unlike the UK) we're sure you'll find that Bilbao has guaranteed Pimms-worthy weather.
- Get there: Use the metro or local buses to get around, the closest metro stop to the old town is Zazpikaleak/Casco Viejo.
- Stay: We suggest staying in Casco Viejo to be near the heart of the action.
*We do our very best to verify the dates of our events but please check with the official event provider before booking your flights. We would hate for you to be disappointed!
