It might be hotter than a sauna but that doesn't stop runners competing in the annual Colombo Marathon.
- When? 8th October 2017
- Where? Throughout Colombo
- Price: TBC
If your idea of a marathon is watching the entire Game of Thrones boxset you need to think again - Colombo's city marathon must be among the hardest in the world. Though the terrain is relatively flat this Sri Lankan City lies so close to the equator that completing the race will almost definitely be a sweaty business...
Despite the heat, plenty of race-goers line up to run the route that snakes around the city. Flanked by the gorgeous backdrop of the Indian Ocean, the route goes past several key city sights and finishes around the Bandaranaike Memorial. Along the way spectators line the streets - Pamunugama Road along the Negombo Lagoon is a serene spot, although the city centre has more of an atmosphere. Over 6000 runners usually take part so there's a good sense of camaraderie and cheering supporters (along with the inevitable crowds too).
Step away from the boxset and get yourself to Colombo's marathon instead - we'll take a trip to this beautiful Sri Lankan city over a date with the sofa any day. And if the heat puts you off competing then you can watch from the (shady) sidelines instead - we can't say we'd blame you.
- Get there: Fly to Colombo and head for the city centre.
- Stay: We recommend staying in the city centre; even if you're not taking part you may get lucky with views of the race.
