Books and beaches - a match made in holiday heaven. How about we take it one step further with a literary festival on a tropical island? Sounds like a real page-turner to us. Interested? Then get yourself to Galle Literary Festival in January for a pretty nalla (good) time.
The Galle Literary Festival is held in high esteem, often compared to the likes of Hay Festival in Columbia and the Wexford Book Festival in Ireland. The decades long war of Sri Lanka has expectantly left strong feelings of anti-war and many of these feelings are evident in the festival's events. Discussions, debates, short films, readings, seminars and workshops have become something of a voice for the injustices that happened during that time. In the past there has been a selection of over 70 events like guided architectural walks within the UNESCO listed fort, film evenings and fusion meals. This makes it a great way of discovering the city and Sri Lankan culture and cooking.
Writers who have attended in the past include Sri Lankan Canadian novelist Shyam Selvadurai, Indian politician Shashi Tharoor and British novelist and critic David Taylor. Events are designed to be intimate with an emphasis on group input. Additionally, there are culinary, ecological, artistic and creative workshops on throughout the day. Musicians and other performers are also in attendance to generate that summer festive feel. Tickets normally go on sale in December and go extremely quickly, so get the date in your diary if you're planning on visiting. Sounds heavenly? We think so.
