If your image of festivals are rivers of mud and empty beer cans galore then you haven't been to Sweden's Malmöfestivalen (Malmö Festival). This sustainable, summer festival is now a firm favourite on the Malmö cultural calendar and even better, it's completely free and eco-friendly. An eight-day city-wide event, the festival hosts live bands, film screenings, cultural performances, food and beer tents plus debates and talks with celebrity guests.

Held in Malmö's centre, Malmöfestivalen attracts a diverse crowd of visitors, from young students to seasoned locals - all seem ready for a week-long party. The festival is super proud of its green credentials and is rightfully boastful of its eco-friendly success (it's won several awards for its efforts in recent years). Running for just over a week, over 1.4 million visitors descend on the city with the centre of town turning into a full-on party; the largest of its kind in Scandinavia. Local and international food stalls pop up, as do workshops, secret bars and DJ stages.

If you can, be there for the opening day of the festival which is known as 'The Crayfish Party'. Over 4000 visitors arrive to open the celebrations, sing drinking songs, don festive attire and eat lots of traditional crayfish. As the night rolls on, the celebrations get rowdier, but the atmosphere keeps its welcoming and fun vibe.

There are plenty of different stages, tents, areas and venues which host events - grab one of the handy maps to keep in the know. The blow-out party on the final night is of epic proportions; so too is the clean up, recycling and 'Leave No Trace' job the next day, which makes us feel all warm and fuzzy inside. We're giving Malmöfestivalen the green light.
