Whether you're an art enthusiast or an inexperienced gallery goer, you'll fit right in at Art Basel with a range of pieces on show to come and see.
Basel is situated on the borders of Switzerland, France and Germany, making it the perfect place to bring together the art world in Europe. The venue is Messe Basel; Switzerland's largest exhibition site which has recently developed a new hall, designed by architects Herzog and de Meuron of Basel. With talks taking place throughout each day, visitors can expand their art knowledge or simply peruse the exhibitions at their leisure. There are events taking place alongside the talks, offered by cultural institutions in Basel and the surrounding areas.
The 2016 edition of the show was the most successful in the history of Art Basel. Over 280 of the world's leading galleries were present, exhibiting the work of over 4000 artists. Over its six days, Art Basel attracted around 98,000 attendees.
Whilst the public opening for Art Basel in 2017 is June 15th - June 18th, lucky visitors may be invited to the private viewings, which take place from June 12th to June 14th. With a variety of exhibitions on show, there's something for everyone to enjoy. Painting, sculpture, installation, photography and live performance make up just some of the genres on display, with the variety going partway in explaining the fascination with Art Basel in the art world.
Guided tours are available for the exhibition, to give a deeper understanding some of the art. Tours are available in English as well as German and French, and are lead by art historians and critics, so you'll be in safe hands as you wander between giant hanging artworks and pieces you can interact with and admire.
Tickets for Art Basel go on sale a few months before the opening, so check the official website for updates. Go from art novice to experienced pro when you visit Art Basel in June. You'll have plenty of time to hone that artistic eye.
