When we tell you The Basel Autumn Fair (or Basel Herbstmesse to the locals) is the largest and oldest in Switzerland, you'll probably be hoping they've upgraded their rides since it first opened over 540 years ago. Luckily the one million visitors that attend every year have no complaints yet.
For two weeks, this historic amusement fair marks a strong tradition in Basel with its opening signalled by the Fair Bell of the Church of Saint Martin at midday on the Saturday before October 30th. In various public spaces across the city exhibitions and carousels pop up, sparking a buzzing festival atmosphere among locals of all ages. While you'll discover a range of typical fairground rides and attractions, they'll also be an array of artisan stalls, tasty food stands and unique show booths to keep you occupied.
The Basel Autumn Fair is the biggest combined amusement park festival and goods fair of its kind in the country and it's fair to say it's come a long way since the 15th century. Count yourself lucky; back then they would have been delighted with a Ferris wheel and a few bumper cars.
