We hope you've got hardly any plans for New Year's Day; attend one of Bangkok's most celebrated New Year's Eve countdown parties and all you'll want to do the morning after is sleep and recover. Outside CentralWorld shopping centre, hundreds of thousands of people flock to enjoy the entertainment that draws in the New Year.
There are many celebrations around the city of Bangkok at this time of year; a unique experience can be found at Asiatique, or opt for classy surroundings at one of Bangkok's outstanding rooftop bars. Yet, despite the endless options, by far the busiest and most popular place to be is just outside the largest mall in the entirety of Thailand.
Some have likened this area to Times Square in New York with a street countdown party taking place and delighting the 100,000+ locals and tourists who attend. Expect beer gardens, lots of tasty food and souvenir stalls, a number of people wearing flashing headbands and a superb program of live entertainment from local bands, artists and DJs. Sometimes there are other forms of entertainment too such as live Muay Thai fights.
However, as with most New Year's Eve celebrations, one of the highlights of the night is the firework display which lights up the night sky creating the icing on the cake for a spectacle which is loved across the entire city.
The mall provides the perfect backdrop for the evening with its bright lights and structure helping to make the event feel atmospheric and modern. Get to Ratchaprasong junction early to get a good spot. Things usually get underway from around 6 p.m. and go on well into the night. What's more is admission is free - that means you'll have more money to spend on beers.
With so many people filling the streets, you'll be surprised to know that getting here is extremely easy. That's if you take the BTS Skytrain. As anyone who has been to Bangkok knows, travel via the roads in a taxi or tuk-tuk and you can guarantee you'll be late (especially with traffic on NYE).
Just make sure you know how to get home before you get started on the beers. Navigating Bangkok after a few too many might see you starting the New Year lost without a bed to sleep in. And you'll certainly be wanting one of those after this party is done with you.
- Get there: Take the BTS Skytrain if you don't want to be late.
- Stay: There are plenty of accommodation options near CentralWorld which are worth booking if you get in there early.
