Fitness-gods and gym-bods take note; if cardio workouts are your thing, the Koh Samui Triathlon might be one of your biggest challenges yet.
- When? TBC April 2018
- Where? Nathon Beach, Koh Samui
- Price: TBC
When chilling on the beach in 30-plus degree heat with a cocktail in hand, some of us find it a struggle to walk ourselves back to the bar for another. So let's just take a moment to appreciate those who compete in the gruelling Koh Samui Triathlon and tackle swimming, cycling and running in one of Koh Samui's hottest months. The competition takes place around the town's main road as well as the secondary, smaller Amphoe Samui.
Every April, both local and international participants come to Koh Samui (usually Nathon Beach) to compete in this popular, annual event. It features a four kilometre swim, a 120km cycling route and a 30km run to finish (just in case you had any left over, pent up energy). If you're an active type and into adventurous athletic events while abroad, go and sign up online; otherwise, you can join the hundreds of spectators and enjoy the atmosphere from the sidelines. The event sees the area's population swell in size and many restaurants and bars offer triathlon food and drinks deals. The route also offers wonderful town and waterfront views.
Hats off to you if you're brave enough to do it - rather you than us. We'll see you at the finish line with an ice-cold beer.
- Get there: Fly to Samui Airport or take a ferry to the island.
- Stay: Find somewhere to stay in Lipa Noi to be nearby.
