Spent all your money on cocktail buckets, Pad Thai and more buckets? Here's an idea: Get yourself a buffalo, beef it up and enter it into the Water Buffalo Fighting Festival on Koh Samui for a chance to win millions (Thai Baht that is).
Buffalo fighting is a long-standing tradition in Koh Samui although it tends to slip under the radar of many tourists who visit. There are stadiums on the island where fights take place regularly throughout the year so you can grab a slice of the action no matter what time of year you visit. However, there is usually a significant event around New Year where a winning buffalo-owner can return home a very happy man or woman with a sufficient prize pot of over one million Thai Baht.
Ask locals or look out for signs around the island to find out when the next big event is scheduled, although it's often on New Year's Day. The fights aren't necessarily the full-blooded affairs you'd expect to see in a Spanish bull-fighting ring and (if it's your thing) you'll get a chance to see a unique cultural spectacle while spending a few days on Koh Samui. The winning buffalo is usually the one who doesn't end up retreating or running from the fight.
So if your backpacking funds are running low and you see a buffalo at the side of the road, don't ignore it; get it to the arena and see what it's got. Probably not the best idea, if an idea at all. But desperate times call for desperate measures.
- Get there: Fly to Koh Samui from the mainland or take a ferry from Koh Tao or Koh Phangan.
- Stay: Find somewhere to stay in Bo Put - it's near the airport and home to a few tourist attractions.
*We do our very best to verify the dates of our events but please check with the official event provider before booking your flights. We would hate for you to be disappointed!
