An international yachting event, Phuket King's Cup Regatta presents a week of sailing, partying and a buzzing atmosphere.

  • Where? Kata Beach, Phuket

If your idea of 'hitting the deck' is faceplanting the dancefloor after a few too many vodkas then a sailing event might not seem like an obvious way to spend the afternoon. But surprisingly sailing and partying go hand in hand at the internationally-renowned Phuket King's Cup Regatta.

Back in 1987, Phuket King's Cup Regatta was born when Thailand’s yachting fraternity wished to make a tribute for the King's birthday. Since then it has gone from strength to strength to become one of the biggest events of its type in the world, attracting some of the finest yachtsmen and yachtswomen on the planet.

The event begins at Kata Beach where a mass of beautiful boats border the Andaman Ocean and line up ready to race, painting a luxurious image that is perfect for your next Instagram photo.

If you have a good amount of sailing experience, you might get the chance to join in on the action. Many of the boats are under-crewed so go get involved if you can and experience the festival from the deck of a very expensive boat. Or better yet, if you have a yacht of your own - enter the competition. Otherwise, remain on land and absorb the buzzing atmosphere by partying at one of the regatta bars, resorts and restaurants, many of which present grand banquets.

Other entertainment around Kata Beach includes live music, dance performances, fireworks, an array of activities and the signature candle-light ceremony in celebration of the King's birthday. Primarily, this event is about sailing but the partying and celebrations on land are guaranteed to deliver good times without the worry of being sea-sick.

As for the inevitable hangover sickness, well you're on your own there. You can't blame the sea for that.

  • Get there: Kata Beach is on the southwest of the island, an hour and 15 minutes' drive from the airport.
  • Stay: Find somewhere to stay near to Kata Beach so you won't miss any of the action.
