Slapstick Festival is a cultural, not-for-profit company that aims to keep silent, visual and classic onscreen comedy alive for future generations. Now 10 years old, the festival has gone from strength to strength, delighting thousands each year and growing dramatically in its reach and scope.

The festival gives audiences the wonderful and often once-in-a-life-time opportunity to see extraordinary films in unique circumstances. Showcasing and celebrating archive film, predominately from the silent era (1895-1930), the festival brings in world class musicians to provide the soundtrack live. There are also some of the most prominent film historians, experts, and comedians inspired by the comedy legends on screen on hand to introduce each event.

Whether you’re interested in comedy from yesteryear or the present day, this festival has something for everyone, combining the contemporary with work from over a century ago.

Last year saw the amusing satirist Marcus Brigstocke take to the stage, as well as popular stand-up Lucy porter and man of science Robin Ince. This humble and well-considered festival can certainly bring in the big names of comedy, yet also manages to keep it’s small, intimate atmosphere at heart. And its growing success just goes to show that comedy and laughter are timeless.

Tickets for the events, however, are certainly not timeless, so get booking now and don’t let this great opportunity go to waste. As Charlie Chaplin said, “A day without laughter is a day wasted.”

  • Get there: Previous years have seen events held at the Watershed, Colston Hall and the Bristol Old Vic which are all within walking distance of each other. Take the train to Bristol Temple Meads and then use locals buses or taxis to get around.
  • Stay: Book accommodation in Redcliffe to be nearby.
