It might surprise you, but the Clerkenwell area of London is home to more creative businesses and architects per square mile than anywhere else in the world. This makes it the perfect location to host a design festival that caters for aesthetes and culture vultures of all types and tastes.
Now in its ninth glorious year, the Clerkenwell Design Week only grows in size and accolades over time. It won the Best Festival and Best Cultural Event at the UK Event Awards in 2012, the Best Live Event at the AEO Awards in 2013 and in 2016 saw over 30,000 attendees flock to over 300 exhibiting brands’ events.
And whilst the focus is set firmly on Design, local businesses across the area have joined the party, with hotels offering great deals, restaurants and bars extending hours and partnering the event, and a plethora of people near and far getting into the community spirit.
For visitors wanting to delve deeper into the Design world, there is an exciting series of talks, discussion, workshops and debates where enthusiasts from across the world can introduce and discuss new products, raise industry issues and network with Art & Design professionals.
And for those that simply want to bask in the atmosphere and appreciate Design innovation at its best, it’s the perfect occasion to explore the area, enjoy the artistic delights you stumble upon, and enjoy a glass of wine in one of the many bars that will undoubtedly spill out onto the street.
This year is expected to be the most ambitious, creative and innovative yet, with both temporary and permanent exhibition venues being developed across local parks, buildings and public spaces.
As William Knight, the Show Director of Clerkenwell Design Week, says: "We have new exhibitions, a new masterplan and a new visual identity. But it is the energy and sense of community among architects and designers here that inspires us, and helps make the festival so unique in London."
So for fans of ingenuity and the creative, this is an absolute must-visit. Don’t miss out and put the dates in your diary now.
