We all know Americans do Halloween better than the rest of us. So how about a trick-or-treat event at one of the most iconic estates in US history? Think Hocus Pocus without the Sanderson sisters.

Mount Vernon, Alexandria may not have Bette Midler singing 'I Put A Spell On You', but it is the home of George Washington, the first president of the US.  For an evening full of history and hauntings visit the centuries-old Washington plantation and join in with the Halloween fun that includes chocolate making and tasting, a costume parade for the little ones, wagon rides and scavenger hunts. If you're feeling particularly flamboyant, why not try a spot of 18th century dancing to whirl away the ghosts (and burn off all those Halloween candy calories).

You'll also learn a thing or two about the estate itself with demonstrations of wool carding, spinning and a meet-and-greet with George and Martha Washington to explain how the Washington family lived in the 1700s. Covering an astounding eleven thousand square-feet, the mansion is ten times the size of an average colonial period house in Virginia, making it the perfect setting for all manner of spooky goings-on. With supposed sightings of ghosts and many a haunted story to tell, Mount Vernon is guaranteed to give you the eerie Halloween experience you'd expect from the US. There are also extensive grounds and gardens to explore, with wonderful photo opportunities.

Tickets are only $12 for adults and $6 for children so the event can sell out pretty quickly. Get in early for all the treats with none of the tricks. Don't forget your hat and broomstick. Costumes are an absolute must.

  • Get there: Drive downtown from Alexandria, you'll reach Mount Vernon in 15 minutes. Public transport will take 40 - 50 minutes.
  • Stay: You could stay in Mount Vernon for the two-day festival, but it's probably best to stay in Alexandria and travel.
