If you loved the mad sounds of famous Ibiza sax legend 'Lovely Laura' when you hit up Ocean Beach this summer then you may want to take a trip across the pond to the States to indulge your new found love of jazzy tunes. Rosslyn Jazz Festival at Gateway Park, Arlington, Virginia to be more specific.

The free event, which has been running for over 25 years, brings together the very best jazz bands and artists for an afternoon of soulful classics and catchy tunes that will have you dancing the night away. With the likes of Grammy-winning Grupo Fantasma headlining the festival in previous years, you can expect an equally impressive line-up including a selection of talented support acts.

The 'Jazz Art Jam' is also worth a look. Watch artists and poets create drawings and poems inspired by the event, interpreting the mood and vibe of the festival as and when it happens. Plus, there are always a number of games including 'create your own instrument for kids' to get involved in.

Local food trucks will be parked up at the event offering delicious snacks as well as wine and beer for those who really want to get into the swing of things. Graze on Spanish delicacies at DC Tapas Truck and finish with a tub of Ben and Jerry's or maybe a Snickerdoodle from Captain Cookie and the Milkman truck.

What's more, the Rosslyn Business Improvement District (BID) usually secures discounts with nearby restaurants, giving visitors who prefer to eat with a knife and fork at the table, a chance to grab a bite to eat before or after the festival. Check on the official website for a list of participating restaurants and be sure to ring ahead and book to avoid disappointment.

And if you happen to play the sax, maybe you should bring it along; you never know when they'll need a stand in. Move over 'Lovely Laura', there's a new sax in town.

  • Get there: You can get to Rosslyn easily from Arlington and Washington by car, taxi or train.
