Yes, you did read that right. There's a bug eating festival in Austin and everyone's curious to give it a try. Queue the 'I'm a celebrity, get me out of here!' moments...
Doesn't it just bug you when your friend, brother, sister or whoever it may be says they don't like something even though they've never tried it? Well we bet the tables are about to turn if you visit Austin's annual Bug Eating Festival (that's unless you're used to snacking on the the little critters). At this event, you can sample a few bugs and claim you're America's answer to Bear Grylls.
Okay so it might not sound like a festival you'll love. And granted, if there's a pizza or taco festival going on at the same time somewhere, you might give this one a miss. Yet, this outright weird (yet wonderful in some ways) festival is one you might enjoy, it seems to attract a large number of people anyway and returned recently by popular demand.
It isn't all about the eating though with educational talks, cooking demonstrations from local chefs and a community atmosphere giving the event a unique twist. However, having said that, most of the visitors here come to try the range of bugs and insects on offer.
Don't think of this as a food festival, more of a fun event you can stop by for an hour or two and experience something completely different from anything else you'll find in Texas. Tickets are usually priced at around $10 for adults and kids go free.
Sure you may think most of what's on offer is disgusting, but you never know - you might end up finding something you like too. Besides, don't they say you should try everything once? Although honestly, we suggest not to skip dinner.
