Get ready to sing the blues at the Baton Rouge Blues Festival this April.

If the smooth sounds of Willie Picket's 'Mustang Sally' strikes a chord with you or the raspy tones of Etta James' 'At Last' gives you all the feels, then you need to hit up the blues capital state of Louisiana next April.
The Baton Rouge Blues Festival is one of the oldest free blues festivals in America. Celebrating the legend of local artists, the festival has also brought in national and international names too. Some notable mentions from 2016 include Buddy Guy, Latimore, Curtis Harding and Kenny Neal.
Having started in 1981, the 2016 incarnation of the Baton Rouge Blues Festival saw nearly 50,000 guests in attendance, with a variety of music from 39 performers over four stages.
Tickets are absolutely free for the Baton Rouge Blues Festival, but VIP tickets are on offer for those that want a little extra. These include access to complimentary food and drink, private bars and bathrooms and exclusive viewing areas for the Swamp Blues and Foundation stages.
Visitors are encouraged to further their blues experience at venues around the city post-festival. With top after parties taking place throughout the city which you'll no doubt be attending, you'll probably be suffering from a case of the holiday blues when you return home from this one.
- Get there: The university is well-connected for public transport, though you could always drive or take a taxi.
- Stay: Book accommodation uptown to be closer to the venue.
