Giant lion puppets, mooncakes, martial arts and more - the annual August Moon Festival in Boston is colourful celebration for all the senses.
- When? TBC 2017
- Where? Harrison and Beach Streets, Chinatown, Boston
- Price: Free
Mooncakes may sounds like something out of Star Wars movie but you don't need to go to the cinema to experience these. Instead, just head to Boston in August where you can discover these traditional sweet treats and more as part of the city's August Moon Festival. Held every year in Chinatown, this day-long celebration is a feast for all the senses (and there's not a space suit in sight).
Celebrating the full moon and the end of harvest season, the event is one of Boston's best-loved outdoor parties, complete with feasting, storytellers, musicians, parades and live bands. Cultural performances take centre stage, with shows from traditional Chinese dancers and martial arts experts. Huge, brightly coloured dragons and lions lead the festivities, creating a lively, carnival vibe. There are also street vendors selling a range of goodies (including Dim Sum) plus souvenirs stalls for those all-important gifts to take home.
Held around Harrison and Beach Streets, August Moon is a great way to experience Boston's thriving Chinese community. Oh, and the mooncakes (lotus seed pastries) well, they're available pretty much everywhere. Who needs a Hollywood sci-fi thriller when you have cake?!
- Get there: Take the underground to Chinatown.
- Stay: Book accommodation in the city centre to be close to the action.
