In Boston and looking to celebrate the 4th of July in style? We've got just the thing to float your boat.
Dating back to 1981, Boston Harborfest attracts around 2.5 million visitors each year, making it the nation's largest patriotic celebration. Taking place at various locations around the city, this multi-day festival highlights Boston's colonial history and commemorates the efforts of the American Revolution. With historical reenactments, Freedom Trail walks and Boston Duck Tours covering just some of the activities, there's certainly plenty to be getting stuck into.
Over 100 events, activities and specials will take place during Harborfest, with previous festivals seeing chocolate making demonstrations, scavenger hunts and historic walking tours, providing plenty of variety to suit all tastes. Many events are repeated daily and most of them are free, including the likes of the Walk Into History tour, where visitors are led along the 16 official sights of Boston's Freedom Trail.
Previous years have seen local artists displaying their works, and more than one huge fireworks display commemorating the 4th of July. The opening ceremony is a well-loved tradition here, and includes a band, speeches and cake cutting. 2016 also saw the entrance of the Queen Mary 2, which sailed into Boston around noon on the 4th ready for the evening celebrations.
#travioortip: Head down to the harbour area a few days before and you'll be able to watch the dress rehearsal.
