You can't get much more Texan than the annual State Fair of Texas held at Fair Park, Dallas. Grab your cowboy hat and loosen that belt, you're in for one hell of a day.
With everything from livestock shows to fairground rides and even unmissable spectacles such as chainsaw carving and the XPogo extreme sports show, the State Fair is tailored for all ages. Creative arts competitions are a major part of the event so you'll have plenty of opportunity to buy hand-sewn, hand-painted and hand-sculpted wonders to add to your travel memorabilia.
Wear something with a big waistline; food is a huge part of the celebration. With miles and miles of stalls, this is your chance to try the greasiest, cheesiest, deep fried wonders of Texas. Bacon-wrapped churros and deep-fried cheeseburger-stuffed onion rings top the list of savoury snacks with State Fair cookie fries and fried Jello-O providing sweet-lovers with a sugar overdose. You can even buy a State Fair Cookbook if you want to recreate any of the unforgettable dishes that have made it into the Big Tex Choice Awards.
There's also a beer garden for craft connoisseurs and a wine garden for adults to escape from screaming, ice-cream covered kids, which offers live jazz and blues shows across the weekends. Live music is on show throughout the day with big names acts such as Nelly and Kacey Musgrove headlining the Chevrolet stage this year.
Look out for season passes on the official website if you're in Dallas for a couple of weeks. There is so much to see and do you could easily come back for a second or third visit. The fair opens at 10 a.m. each day closing at 9 p.m. on Sunday to Thursday and 10 p.m on Friday and Saturday. Advanced ticket sales at bigtex.com are a great way to save money and mean you don't have to queue at ticket booths to buy them on the day.
Back-comb that hair, dust off your cowboy boots and fill your wallet, the fair has come to town.
- Get there: Drive east towards Dolphin Heights and you'll reach Fair Park. Parking can be tricky though, so you could take the DART Rail to Fair Park Station instead.
- Stay: If you're going to be visiting multiple times, it might be worth finding accommodation near to Fair Park, otherwise we suggest staying in the city centre and travelling.
