If art and cars get your motor running, drive on over to the annual Art Car Parade in Houston. Some of the creations look so good they might as well be meals on wheels. With the parade pulling in over 250,000 spectators, this is one event you won't want to miss if you're in the city in April.
The Art Car Parade was born in 1988, originally attracting around 2000 auto-lovers to the streets of Houston to watch 40 cars, of all shapes and sizes, crawl along the street. Today the parade is the star attraction of a three-day weekend event that's filled with parties, exhibitions and celebrations. The parade itself takes place on the Saturday and sees more than 250 innovative and beautifully decorated cars, bikes and practically anything that's on wheels cruise along Smith Street in downtown Houston. With entries from over 20 states, as well as entrants travelling over from Canada and Mexico, car owners follow the motto 'go big or go home' when it comes to decorating their vehicles and aim to be more creative every year in an attempt to be awarded Art Car Parade champion.
The main event kicks off around 2pm and runs for about two hours. Plus, while you watch they'll be plenty of food and drink vendors nearby from a selection of Houston's top restaurants and eateries. Just in case you get hungry looking at all those meals on wheels.
- Get there: Parking is difficult in downtown Houston, so either walk from a downtown location or take the tram.
- Stay: Book accommodation downtown if possible; you'll be close to the festival and won't have to worry about transport.
