- Where? NRG Stadium, Houston.
- Price: Tickets vary in price per event, but day admission is between $5 and $10.
If you spent your youth playing cowboys and Indians or watching films set in the wild west, the Houston Livestock Show and Rodeo might be for you. Attracting over two million people from all over the world, there's certainly no tumbleweed blowing along abandoned streets when this festival comes to town.
Arranged by a charitable organisation who aim to help the local youth, support education and promote agricultural industries, this festival has been running since 1932 committing over $400 million to young Texans in that time. Beyond its incredible work and achievements, behind the scenes, the Livestock Show and Rodeo packs bucket-loads of entertainment into three weeks that is enjoyed by locals and tourists alike.
The entire festival is a huge celebration with more action than a Clint Eastwood film. Pre-show events range from a BBQ and best bites competition to grand parades and 10K runs. Watch livestock and horse shows, calf scrambling, and an array of contests. There's also live music with past shows welcoming international artists such as Elvis Presley, Usher and Taylor Swift.
A number of attractions, exhibitions and activities add another dimension to the festival, while the signature rodeo events draw huge crowds to the arena. The biggest of the lot is the Super Series which crowns a champion in bareback riding, bull riding, saddle bronc riding, steer wrestling, tie-down roping, team roping and women’s barrel racing. They each receive $50,000 prize money (not too bad eh?!). Other rodeo events to look out for are the Super Shootout and Rodeo 101.
You can purchase ground passes for a great price whereas rodeo and concert tickets cost a fair amount more. If you want to go all out on the costume front, take a little inspiration from everyone's favourite cowboy à la Toy Story. The Woody look will score you big points.
- Get there: Parking is available but limited, take the METRORail or consider a park and ride scheme.
- Stay: All the venues are in downtown Houston, so stay there if you plan to attend a lot of shows.
