Around 50 miles northwest of Houston, the Texas Renaissance Festival will send you back thousands of years with its array of events and entertainment.
Why wait for time machines to be invented when you can go back to the 16th century at the Texas Renaissance Festival? But you'll need to dig out the jerkins, tunics and surcoats for this event, where 55 acres of New Market Village is turned into a medieval English township just outside of Houston.
Every year, this fun, family-friendly event presents eight themed weekends of entertainment throughout October and November. Themes can include anything from Oktoberfest and Pirate Adventure to Barbarian Invasion and Highland Fling; all of which encourage visitors to attend in themed Renaissance attire. Welcoming a total of around half a million people, this mega-fest is a highlight on the region's cultural calendar.
The festival is full of kings, queens, lords, ladies, knights, nobles and various other characters creating an as-close-as possible authentic Renaissance experience. An array of performances are inspired by the medieval era where musicians, jugglers, acrobats, magicians and more step onto one of 20 stages to give over 200 daily performances between them.
Various stalls and stands give artisans and craftsman the chance to showcase their skills including glass blowing and pottery-making. Plus, you can also expect lots of tasty food and drink - be sure to join the King's Feat to sample classic Renaissance dishes. If you want to extend your weekend, then camping facilities are available as well as several evening firework displays (weather permitting).
Dress to impress. Just remember - jeans haven't been invented yet.
