While it might not be up there with the likes of Glastonbury or Tomorrowland, Kauai's Slack Key Guitar Festival is nevertheless an award-winning music event that draws locals and visitors alike. Part cultural showcase, part musical stage show, this is the perfect addition to your Kauai Island escape.
The festival tours around all of the main Hawaiian islands but there's something about picturesque Kauai that makes it all the more magical. Previous years have been held in a variety of locations, including the Aqua Kauai Beach Resort. The event showcases the traditional Hawaiian music form of slack key guitar that is synonymous with the sounds of these tropical islands. Guided by the kupuna (which means the 'elders') the line-up of musicians (many of whom are internationally acclaimed) perform musical sets according to traditional forms and rituals known as Ki-ho'alu. The quality of the performances are spell-binding; add in the accompanying cultural atmosphere and you've got the chance to witness something amazing.
So forget your festival preconceptions of mud, mess and hardcore sound systems; Kauai's Hawaiian Slack Key Guitar Festival takes live performance back to its roots with a generous splash of culture too. Plus, we'll take a festival on the shores of a tropical paradise over the Pyramid Stage any day. Sorry Glasto.
- Get there: The exact venue for 2017's festival hasn't been released yet, but most places on the island can be reached by taxi from Lihue Airport.
- Stay: Kauai is so small that you can get from one side of the island to the other in little over an hour. Book accommodation as near to the venue as possible.
