If you're looking to inject a little va va vroom into your Reno holiday, consider visiting in August when Hot August Nights comes to town. Bringing almost one million people to Reno, this event is regarded as the biggest of the year.

Back in 1986, Hot August Nights was born in the Convention Center parking lot attracting only 10,000 spectators who came to see the Righteous Brothers, Wolfman Jack, and Jan & Dean. The visitors relived their childhood days of the 50s and 60s dancing and partying into the night. The car parade at the festival's other location (Virginia Street) stole the show and prompted it to take priority at every festival since. Both Reno and Virginia Street haven't looked in the rear view mirror since.

Car fanatics will feel at home here where a stunning car parade features vintage motors and classical engineering bringing back memories of an American era where cruising, high school proms and sock hops were the talk of the town. As well as all the amazing cars on show, there will be excellent entertainment with rock 'n' roll music blasting out to the joy of hundreds of thousands of people who party and dance the days and nights away.

The six days are full of activities and car related events some of which the general public can try and enter. You can expect anything from drag races to drifting, with every event pulling in a large crowd. And once you've finished watching or taking part in an event, head for the bars, clubs and casinos where the parties add a little va va voom to the va va vroom.

  • Get there: Fly into Reno–Tahoe International Airport and take the bus or a taxi to reach downtown.
