Taco about a Mexican celebration! This one - known as Woodburn Fiesta Mexicana - is one event you can't miss if you're in the state of Oregon during summer. Occurring annually at Legion Park in Woodburn just down the road from Salem, this family friendly event attracts a bucket-load of visitors across the weekend who all come to enjoy and celebrate Hispanic culture.
Starting out more than 50 years ago, way back in 1964, this festival was originally known as 'Fiesta Time' and first came about to celebrate the end of the harvest and show appreciation for farmers. Since then it has catapulted into one of the state's most significant cultural events and attracts people of all ages from across Oregon.
An action-packed program of entertainment should be expected during the weekend which usually includes various forms of dancing like salsa and folklore, a number of comedy acts and a selection of live music. Although there are stage performances, shows and displays, the parade is one of the Fiesta Mexicana highlights and usually takes place on the Saturday morning. In addition, activities and sports tournaments are also organised for active-types.
Of course one of the biggest draws of Hispanic culture is the food and visitors are always amazed by the tasty Mexican fare sold at stalls and at the food pavilion. Whether its mouth-watering enchiladas covered in melted cheese, spicy tacos drizzled in sour cream or sweet churros dipped in chocolate, you can expect all your traditional favourites. Bringing an appetite is a must!
Before you leave, make sure you check out the amazing artisan and crafts booths which display a range of excellent gifts and designs. From beautiful art and custom-made jewellery, to traditional pottery and woodwork, you'll love the unique items on offer here. Just make sure you get yourself a comfy bed because you'll certainly need one after you're done with the grub at Fiesta Mexicana.
