Why follow the rainbow when you can follow a flight path to California for San Diego Pride in July. Full of colour, sparkle and good spirits, this festival is one of the United States' biggest celebrations of the LGBT community.
For a weekend in July, the annual San Diego Pride festival celebrations get underway with block parties on the Friday. However, the best and most popular events don't take place until Saturday and Sunday. The star attraction is no doubt the Pride Parade which begins at the Hillcrest Pride Flag at University Ave. and Normal St. before finishing in Laurel St. Expect over a mile of extravagant costumes and colourful floats in an event which sees more than 100,000 people attending each year.
Aside from the parade, the music festival is one of the signature events which takes place on both days in the emphatic Balboa Park and attracts over 40,000 people. A great line-up of talented musicians, comedians, dancers and bands will take to the stage while the rest of the park is lined with vendor booths, art exhibits and food stalls.
Make sure you dress appropriately, by which we mean no dull or boring colours allowed.
- Get there: Fly to San Diego International Airport and take a taxi to the city centre.
- Stay: Book accommodation in North Park or South Park.
