Musical performances, DJs, vendors, artists and dancers take over the city's streets for a day of costumed frivolity.
- When? TBC May 2018
- Where? Howard Street, San Francisco
- Price: $20 donation
If something was described to you as 'the weirdest show on earth' you may very well run in the opposite direction for fear of getting nightmares. Not so at San Fran's kooky 'How Weird Street Faire', a wacky street festival with plenty of personality. In fact it is so popular, it attracts tens of thousands of revellers every year.
The event, which runs on a Sunday in late spring, features musical performances, DJs, vendors, artists and dancers, who come together in San Francisco's streets dressed in the strangest outfits they can find. There's also a variety of music stages, circus acts and food stands to keep crowds in high spirits. Each year brings with it a different theme and visitors are asked to donate $20 to help pay for the faire and keep the event running in the future (fingers crossed!). When it comes to finding yourself a costume, event organisers recommend something 'colourful, creative, fun, and weird'. As you can imagine, with such a creatively vague description, some costumes are pretty outlandish.
So while you may see carrots, dragons, sandwiches or even the moon walking past, you're nevertheless guaranteed a good time. Fun, light-hearted and arty, this is a great event to immerse yourself in if you're looking to experience San Francisco's quirky culture. We promise you won't end up with nightmares...
- Get there: Fly into San Francisco International Airport then take a shuttle bus/taxi to the city.
- Stay: Find a hotel close to Union Square so you can walk to the festival but are also close to other attractions and shops.
